2019 Summer Reading - For all ages!
The Library is your best bet for beating Summer Boredom and the Summer Slide without breaking the bank. Patch Power: Summer Quest 2019 will keep children, from preschool through Grade 5, reading, engaged, and entertained all summer. All preschool to Grade 5 summer program participants are encouraged to read every day all summer--at least 30 minutes for preschool and elementary students. While encouraging a lifelong habit of daily reading, participation will also combat the Summer Slide, in which children lose skills if they don’t read over the summer. By reading every day, children will, at the very least, maintain skills and, more often than not, increase them. The more they read the better, so surround your children with lots of fun books that they’ll enjoy reading to encourage a valuable lifelong habit.
Our new Patch Power: Summer Quest 2019 goes beyond reading by encouraging participants to explore new topics and complete a variety of activities to earn patches. Children will be able to earn their patches by completing independent activities on their own at home (and showing their work or creations when they report to the library) OR by attending library programs specific to that badge. Any combination of independent activities and programs totaling four will earn a badge.
The 2019 badges are:
• The Board Game Genius
• Caped Avenger
• Epic Wizard
• The Globetrotter
• Interstellar Seeker
• The Mad Chef
The library staff has planned lots of interesting activities and programs for each patch, some for preschool participants and some for Grades 1 to 5. The program listing on the Event Calendar will indicate which programs will help complete each patch. Check with your local library for dates and information. Registration at the Chester County Library begins on June 3rd.
We will also offer a summer program for students in Grade 6 and up this summer. Participants in our Teen Library Crew are encouraged to read for at least 60 minutes daily all summer to earn prizes. We’ll also hold a wide variety of programs for teens only. Don’t miss out on the fun!
Parents needn’t feel left out. Once again this year, the library will offer a summer reading program for adults. By joining, parents can inspire their children by being role models for reading, learning, and curiosity. Welcome to a Universe of Stories rocketing into a library near you! Are you ready to launch? This year’s theme, a Universe of Stories, coincides with the approaching 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Sign up for the Adult Summer Reading Club and complete tasks in five different categories that align with this year’s Children’s Summer Reading program: Board Game Genius, Interstellar Seeker, Caped Avenger, Mad Chef, and The Globetrotter. Each category will have its own related reading activities and educational programs. As in past years, for each task completed you will earn raffle tickets for chances to win wonderful prizes.
Adult Summer Reading is open to all readers ages 18 and up. Register here or sign up in person beginning June 3rd at either Chester County Library or Henrietta Hankin Branch. Those who register between June 3rd and 17th will automatically be entered for a raffle to win a booklet of six tickets to attend the Reading Fighting Phils baseball games this season.
