The First Transcontinental Railroad

The Transcontinental Railroad was 150 years old in 2019. It was the greatest and most talked about engineering project of the 19th century and was followed by the public much like the Space Race was a hundred years later. Join historian David Walter and explore the vision of those who financed and constructed the railroad; rogues and heroes alike. Learn about the Irish and Chinese laborers, the back-breaking labor and the loneliness of the construction crews, the sad outcome for Native Americans, the scandals and the robber barons. The Transcontinental Railroad was the result of the U.S. commitment to Manifest Destiny and its burgeoning industrial might. The transcontinental railroad made the continent into a nation.
