Camp Elder: The Strange Story
of Westtown's Union Paroled Prisoner of War Camp
Presented by historian David Walter, Chair emeritus of the Westtown Township Historical Commission, the story of Camp Elder in Westtown is a strange tale. For seven weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, approximately 2,000 Union Army paroled prisoners of war were held, under guard, in Westtown Township. After extensive research into camp records, Mr. Walter has prepared an illustrated PowerPoint presentation of the camp and some of its commanders and prisoners. The stories are ironic, humorous, tragic and even romantic.
